It used to be true that anyone returning to Mexico had to pay half of the travel costs of returning to their home. Now, though, the entire trip from the border will be free. This new program is true only for individuals coming through California into Baja California. Federal officials on both sides of the border hope that the program will be extended to other areas soon.

 The new program, in addition to providing transportation, ensures that returning Mexicans will receive shelter, food, emergency medical care, and temporary employment following their return to Mexico. Ten Mexican federal immigration agents who have been trained to work with returning migrants have been assigned to Tijuana.
